Bitmap Typeface part 2

I chose to go with typeface 3 and build off of that. Here's the digitized result:

Bitmap Typeface part 1

Our assignment was to explore bitmap fonts using found objects. I chose to use some old washers I had lying around the house. Using a grid, I laid out three different letter forms, from which I will create my bitmap. Here are the three designs I came up with:

FInalized print layouts too

So yeah, I'm still getting the hang of this blogging thing. I plan on just doing a mass update of stuff...prolly around Turkey Day. That previous post made me realize I hadn't even put up my final print layouts. eh.

We took the informative spreads about our elements to the web.

Calcium Ca

For Typography 1, we were given the task of creating monograms/logos of an element we were given. I was assigned calcium. I decided to go with heavier fonts, since calcium is an integral component in building strong bones in animals and humans.

Calcium is extremely important for living organisms. It is a prime material in helping mineralize bones and shells. As a result calcium is the most abundant metal by mass in many animals. Approximately ninety-nine percent of the human body’s calcium is found in the bones and teeth. Calcium cannot be found naturally in its elemental state, but does appear commonly among certain sedimentary rocks and minerals such as calcite, dolomite, and gypsum. It is also found in igneous and metamorphic rocks. Overall calcium is the 5th most abundant element by mass in both the Earth’s crust and dissolved seawater.
Calcium (in latin calcis meaning “lime”) was used by the Romans in the first century to prepare lime as calcium oxide. Plasters containing calcium have been known to help set broken bones since 975 AD. It was isolated in 1808 in England by Sir Humphry Davy, by using an electrolyzed mixture of lime and mercuric oxide. It was not available on a larger scale until the early 20th century.

Galactic Galleria

Galactic Galleria from Sean Minor on Vimeo.

Sweet type animations! I found that Flash can be a fickle lover, as it did not want to export a glitch free version of this animation. Hopefully I can get a better one uploaded tomorrow.

Some words to fool around with (updated)

My first mind map led me to the theme of awkward social interaction (probably fueled by my time here in Design...). I started a second mind map using the prompt nature, and found a parallel between human social interaction and human/nature interactions, particularly drowning. These are the finalized words I'll be using for my typographic narrative:

Plunge
Fathomless
Panic
Gurgle
Struggle
Deprivation
Surface
Salvation
Breathe

original list:

deep
vast
panic
trapped
salvation
escape
alone
surface
swallow
infinite
breathe
blur
overwhelm
plunge
struggle
grave

Letter forms

So I was given the letter "a" to work with. I've always found drawing them tricky, but this went pretty well I think.  I didn't really think about it too much. I just started freehanding.

As a way to get a little more comfortable working in the department, I decided to take one letter through a more familiar printmaking process. I chose to turn the Clarendon form into a lithograph.

ehh. they're done. I feel pretty indifferent about these, but it was a good exercise.

Welcome to my blog!

Hello there!

My name is Sean Minor, and I am a visual/recording artist currently working on my BFA at the Kansas City Art Institute. I have an affinity for printmaking and graphic design, especially package design. I have recently sprouted an interest for motion graphics, which I have used in conjunction with some of my audio works (recorded under the moniker "Atilla"). I find the dissemination of information to be extremely interesting/important, and love combining media to communicate my ideas.

See ya around!
